CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CAUDALIE

Are Retinol Alternatives Really Worth It?

CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CAUDALIE

Anyone else’s kids completely aged them and looking for some skincare to repair the damage?

Caudalie’s Resveratrol-Lift Firming Cashmere Cream has been clinically proven to make skin 98% firmer in less than 3 weeks*.

So could it be an alternative to Retinol?

Read on to find out…

*Clinical study: % of satisfaction, 44 volunteers, 18 days.

What Exactly is Retinol?

Retinol (aka Vitamin A) is an antioxidant within your body and an incredible ingredient that can benefit your skin. Because Retinol can cause irritation and redness, one of the biggest misconceptions is that it exfoliates the skin. Instead, it helps to support the skin, and because of its uniquely small molecular structure, it can penetrate the deepest levels of our skin and help boost the production of collagen and elastin. *Which keeps us looking young.

What Can I Use Instead of Retinol?

While you can’t match the exact power of Retinol (Vitamin A), you can mimic the effects with some incredible gentler alternatives.
Highly effective skincare like Caudalie’s Resveratrol-Lift range, contains an exclusive anti-ageing patent, which uses Vine Resveratrol, Hyaluronic Acids and Vegan Collagen Booster, to stimulate all 3 types of collagen, which can visibly help the signs of ageing.

  • 98% Firmer skin in less than 3 weeks*
  • X5 more natural collagen production**
  • X2 more natural hyaluronic acid production**

*Clinical study: % of satisfaction, 44 volunteers, 18 days. **Test in vitro on ingredients.

Are Retinol Alternatives Any Good?

Yes absolutely! They can work wonders to enhance your complexion, and many are safe to use throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. They’re also gentler to use on sensitive complexions that might be more prone to hormonal flare-ups.

What We Thought When We Used Them…

“I have been a long-term fan of Retinol, so when I found out I was pregnant, I wasn’t sure where to start with an alternative. I was pleasantly surprised by how well other ingredients stood up. During my first (very sickly!) trimester, I felt like my skin became very dull. After introducing a collagen-based cream to my morning routine, I started to see the pregnancy-like glow that I expected to receive naturally!”
TMC Contributor, Matilda Stanley

Where to Find Retinol Alternatives…

Caudalie’s Resveratrol-Lift range encompasses a set of facial products that work to plump and smooth your complexion and contains a mix of unique and hard-working ingredients.

The Powerful Ingredients in Caudalie’s Resveratrol-Lift Range…

  1. Hyaluronic Acid
    Plumps and hydrates the skin.
  2. Resveratrol
Similar to Retinol, it is an antioxidant that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, even skin tone and helps with firmness.
  3. Vegan Collagen 1:
A patented plant-based ingredient that mimics the same collagen found in our skin. It also boosts collagen production and reinforces skin firmness.
  4. Collagen Booster
Makes your face look less tired and more youthful.

Reviewed By Us: The Tawny Hotel

Reviewed By: TMC Co-Founder, Jessica Lawes

Pro IconPros

You have your own private space

The interiors are to die for

Endless countryside to explore

They now have accommodation for larger families (6+)

Plenty of options to elevate your stay

Con IconCons

If you’re a larger family the locations are a 10 minute drive off site

If you’re staying in the lodges, you can’t use the main facilities

What Is It?
What Is It?

A deconstructed hotel in the heart of the English countryside. Tawny takes all the best bits from a traditional hotel experience (a fabulous restaurant, room service, amazing guest facilities and heated outdoor pool)and combines them with the most stunning private space.

Overall Thoughts

As a larger family we struggle to book typical hotel mini breaks. So when I saw that The Tawny had launched their new lodges, I jumped at the chance to book. The lodges are hidden away in the Staffordshire countryside and it could not be more private. You really feel cut off from the rest of the world.

The interiors are stunning and the lodges provide everything from coffee machines to dishwashers. And you still recieve luxury toiletries, robes and slippers, which gives fancy hotel vibes in an AirBnb style environment.

The outdoor pool and bath, along with the games room gave the adults and children entertainment all day long. We also made great use of the champagne table in the heated pool (which was very warm, even in January).
And even though it’s secluded and private, you’re not left on your own, as the Tawny hotel offer lots of concierge services, including a trail map that takes you around the grounds and explains the history and architecture. We had a great day following this and then finishing up at the Pumicorn for lunch. *The Plumicorn is on site, and open to the public, so I would recommend booking ahead. Perfect for families as they have a great children’s offering and a little hidden games room off the main restaurant.

You can book plenty of add ons during your stay, like private chefs, breakfast hampers and cocktail classes – that can all be done within the comfort of your lodge.

The icing on the cake was that we could take our (well behaved) 7th member of the family – Frank the dog!

Is It Worth the Money?
Is It Worth the Money?

Yes, for 8 people to stay I would say it’s a great price, especially with your own little pool and with it being such a private spot.

It becomes slightly more expensive when factoring in children, but I would still say it’s worth it. We had a great family stay and my cup now feels well and truly filled.

Any Downsides?

After booking online, I did call the reception to find out if there was a children’s swim time, this was when I found out that because we were staying in the lodges and not the main hotel, we could not use the facilities on the site. Which was a shame and not mentioned at the time of booking. Not the end of the world as we obviously had our own private facilities to use. But something to bear in mind.

With the lodge being self-catering, we did need to do a shop beforehand, which added on some admin and we inevitably forgot a few things but there is a very small shop about 5 minutes’ drive away. It didn’t have everything we needed but it does stock the essentials.

The hampers were a great option but as they are priced per head, and we were visiting as 2 adults 4 children they were a bit spenny (full English hamper £25 pp). However, if we were visiting with other couples it would be worth doing.

“I Resented My Partner After Having Kids”

Written by TMC Editor, Lydia House

“After multiple arguments, I had started to wonder if I’d made the right choice about having a baby with my husband.”

We Couldn’t Stop Arguing After Our Second Baby

“It was 2021, and we’d just had baby number two, and our eldest was 17 months old. The days and weeks of broken sleep had started to take its toll on both of us. The divide between me carrying the heaviest weight of parental duties and him working in a highly pressurised job had become apparent. The arguing and bickering had reached full peak.”

“At its worst, we’d both threatened divorce and had reached what felt like the breaking point of our marriage.”

“I started to resent him daily. I felt like I was stuck at home with two kids while he went on business trips or after work drinks. He also seemed to have more energy for fitness and hobbies, while I was tired and frustrated.”

The Conversation and Quote That Helped Me

“While confiding in my mum about how I was feeling, she assured me that most couples go through this stage when their children are small. She even recalled a statement that Michelle Obama had said where she revealed she couldn’t stand Barack for the ten years their kids were little.
While I was shocked at the ten-year bit (hopefully it won’t be for that long). Knowing it was likely to be a phase really helped me.”

Barack Reacts to Michelle’s Claim of Not Liking Him for 10 Years of Their Marriage

Things Started to Get Better

“As our children have got older, things have improved. Of course, some days he drives me mad and we still argue. But (as bad as it sounds) recently we’ve started to like each other again.
Fighting is never pleasant, but often, the big rows have unearthed feelings we’ve been building or hiding and inevitably improved things. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not advising you to argue to benefit your relationship, and of course, the sensible thing would be to try to talk first.
However, tiredness can overrule rationale when you’re in the ‘Baby Trenches’. So, if you’re feeling a bit down and you’re bickering with your partner. Know that you’re not alone, and it should improve with time.”

A Relationship Expert Explains Why It’s Normal to Resent Your Partner After Kids

Relationship and Psychosexual Therapist Elinor Harvey says, “Moving from being a two to a three is hard. Really hard! I see a lot of parents with young children who are struggling in their relationship. They usually tell me different but similar narratives about their situation: “We’re bickering constantly.” “We’re hardly having sex anymore.” And the big one: “I just resent him so much!” We don’t talk enough about how resentment and stress can easily build up in a relationship between two otherwise loving individuals. However, it is totally and utterly normal, especially when you understand how much mums go through from the moment they fall pregnant. Bodily changes, hormonal rollercoasters, birth trauma, career uncertainty, sleep deprivation, prolapses, swollen breasts, the mental load, school WhatsApp groups… the impact on mums can feel overwhelming. If we have good coping resources, such as good sleep, opportunities for rest, a supportive social life, exercise, etc., we can often manage these feelings. However, when we don’t have our usual coping resources to hand, then it can build up, and it’s natural for that stress to be directed at the person closest to us: our partner.

What Can You Do to Stop Resenting Your Partner

Elinor says, “Luckily, there is a lot you can do to navigate these hurdles. I’m passionate about empowering couples to make the changes that mean they can start to enjoy and appreciate each other again and get their spark back.”

  1. Leave the House
Granted, this isn’t always possible if you don’t have family or a reliable babysitter nearby. But spending time together as a couple is so important. You can’t see each other as individuals when you’re both in Parent Mode the whole time, but taking that Parent hat off, even just for an hour or two, allows you to step back and see each other as adults again. If you can’t leave the house, could you spend time together in the garden one evening, or in a different part of your home? The endless sofa ‘n’ boxset evenings can quickly leave a relationship feeling stale.
  2. Reminisce together
Sometimes, it can feel like you’ve been parenting for 1000 years and forget what life was like before. Taking the time to talk together can be important to show each other that, no matter how much you love your kids, you are both missing parts of your old life together too. Can you remember your first date or what attracted you to the other person? Why do you think you chose each other? What was it about them that felt special? Talking together helps your brain remember that your partner is not the enemy and allows you to reconnect with the many positive attributes you’ve overlooked amidst the parenting juggle.
  3. Express your needs
In long-term relationships, we can sometimes expect our partner to be a mind reader. However, if we don’t tell our partner how we’re feeling and what we need, it’s not fair to expect them to just know. Expressing our needs can be challenging if you grew up being encouraged to suppress your feelings or if you highly value your independence. I try to encourage my clients that having needs isn’t ‘needy’: it’s a normal part of being human. When our needs aren’t met, it’s easy for difficulties and resentments to arise, so it’s vital to talk to our partners and give them the opportunity to help us meet those needs.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Sometimes, we just can’t figure out where to start resolving relationship issues ourselves and need a professional to help us work things out. As a Relationship Therapist, I’m experienced in helping clients make sense of the triggers and maintaining factors for their relationship issues. I can provide expert guidance and clinical exercises that really do help. However, many people put off seeking help for a long time, and difficulties can then become more entrenched and patterns of behaviour more problematic. Seeking professional support early can be an empowering first step to help you both start to address and overcome issues before they get worse. Most clients express relief after their first session: “I wish we’d come years before!”.

Ultimately, there’s no shame in struggling with your relationship, especially in the early years of parenting when you’re exhausted and have zero time to yourself. Just because it’s normal doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do to improve the situation. So being positive, open with your communication, and trying to share your feelings with your partner – is a great way to start.

Pro IconPros

It’s one of the UK’s best spas

It’s so quiet and there’s tons of space

You can still enjoy lots of the areas if you’re pregnant

The facilities are beautiful

Con IconCons

The booking can be confusing

The Club area is accessible only to a select group of members and a limited number of guests or residents on Club packages. So make sure you check before booking.

If you stay and have to upgrade it’s expensive.

What is it?

The Club at Cottonmill, in St Albans, is a members only spa that is available to book as a spa day or if you are are staying in the Mews rooms of Sopwell House and features world class spaces and facilities including new spa gardens, Garden Room, Whisper Room and Deep Relaxation Room.

Overall Thoughts
Overall Thoughts

“I’ve never been to a spa that’s so quiet. The facilities are beautiful inside and out and have some fantastic treatments on offer. My husband had ‘The Sound and Sand’ treatment, which is a massage that’s done on a vibrating quartz bed and he said it was the most amazing treatment he’s ever had. Sadly, I was pregnant, so I couldn’t have this one or utilise all the areas, like the jacuzzis and saunas but I still had a great time. The Club also has the most amazing relaxation room. There were tons of places to sit or relax, both inside and out. And it’s on two levels, so even at its busiest times it felt peaceful. I’d definitely go back but I think I’ll book in for a Spa Day instead of staying over.”

Any Downsides?

“The Cottonmill Spa and The Club at Cottonmill Spa are two completely different areas and not all hotel guests have access to The Club, even if you book certain spa packages.

The Cottomill Spa, which is open to all hotel guests is just a pool and a jacuzzi and doesn’t come close to the facilities in The Club area.

My husband and I went here on a mini break before we had our first baby and we booked a costly hotel package with dinner and spa treatments, but when we checked into the Cottonmill Spa, they said we had to pay another £100 per person per day (we were staying for 2 days, so it would have meant another £400) to use the new facilities, which made no sense. We complained, and they wavered it. But double-check before you book as I’m not sure they’d do that for everyone.”

Is it Worth the Money?
Is it Worth the Money?

“Staying in the hotel and paying another £100 a day is not worth it as the rooms are expensive and not that great. You can book in to a Mews room but they’re extremely expensive. So I think I’d either stay nearby and get an Airbnb or another hotel or just drive up for Spa Day. I looked and The Spa Day packages are much better value and I’d say even though it’s still expensive, it’s one of the best spas I’ve ever been to and well worth the splurge.”

TMC Family Recipe of the Week: Fluffy Yoghurt Pancakes

“Your standard pancake recipe is about to get upgraded…”

Created in Partnership With The Coconut Collab

Ingredients…

– 1 cup (120 g) plain flour

– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

– 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder

– 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

– 1 cup plain of The Coconut Collab Natural Yog

– 2 large eggs

– 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, or vegetable oil

– 1/4 to 1/3 cup whole milk, optional

– Salted butter, maple syrup, honey, and/or jam, for serving

“Plant-based? No problem, simply omit the eggs and use a plant-based butter instead. By using The Coconut Collab Yoghurt in the batter, it will still bind together nicely for perfect pancakes!”

How to Make Them…

1. Heat a griddle or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Rotate it regularly to make sure it’s evenly heated.

2. Once it’s hot, turn down the heat to medium and maintain a hot surface. (You want a drop of water to bounce or dance on it but not splatter or explode—that’s too hot). Adjusting the heat and maintaining an even pan temperature is the key to evenly cooked pancakes.

3. While the griddle or pan heats up, make the batter. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.

4. In another medium bowl, whisk together the yoghurt and eggs.

5. Add the yoghurt-egg mixture to the flour mixture and stir to combine.

6. Stir in the melted butter or oil. If the batter is too thick (which can happen based on the consistency of the yoghurt that is used), slowly add 1/4 to 1/3 cup milk.

How to Cook Them…

7. Brush or spray oil onto the hot griddle or pan. Spoon the batter into even cakes and cook until bubbles form on the surface of the cakes, about 2 minutes.

8. Using a spatula, flip the cakes over and cook until they are golden brown on the other side—about another 2 minutes. Working in batches, only cook as many pancakes as will fit on your pan without touching.

9. Transfer the pancakes to a platter or individual plates.

10. Serve pancakes hot, with butter, maple syrup, honey, or jam as you like.

The Verdict…

“I can’t believe how yummy these pancakes were! I’ll be using yoghurt every time I make them now.”
