Book into a Restorative Sleep Day

The recently renovated H Spa at Horwood House has just launched an Aromatherapy Associates Restorative Sleep Day. So naturally, we needed to test it out.

TMC Co-Founder Jessica Lawes went along with her mum, and this is what she thought.

What is a Sleep Day?

“The day includes full use of the spa facilities from 9am to 5pm, a 60-minute Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Body Treatment and a delicious Afternoon Tea. It’s the ideal way to take some time out, reboot and set yourself up for a good night’s sleep. *If that’s ever possible with young children.”

Do You Actually Nap?

“I had a Deep Relax Full Body Massage. It took around 60 minutes and was blissful. I usually go for a facial on a spa day, but the massage was exactly what I needed. I really enjoyed the use of Aromatherapy Associates aromatic oils; they smelt amazing but also helped me completely relax.
Afterwards, we used the sleep room and silently lay on the comfy beds for a good hour. I didn’t nap, but it is the perfect place to have one.
The grounds that the hotel and spa are set in are beautiful. It’s not a big spa, but that means it isn’t busy, which I liked. I could have gone straight to bed after the day, but unfortunately, I was not staying over, and it was time to get the kids.”

What is Horwood House & Spa Like?

“I took my mum along with me. She is always a great help with the children even though she doesn’t live nearby, it was nice to do something sans kids with her. It’s only when you spend time together without the children that you realise you hardly ever spend one on one time together. So, this is a PSA to take your mum to a spa! The grounds that the hotel and spa are set in are beautiful. It’s not a big spa, but that means it isn’t busy, which I liked. I could have gone straight to bed after the day, but unfortunately, I was not staying over, and it was time to get the kids.”

Anything You’d Change?

“Although the day was such a treat, it was a shame to get out of my robe and head back to ‘reality’ when I was in such a relaxed mood. Next time I would certainly stay over to make the most of it, and I’d also like to try out ‘Harry’s Bar’ for lunch.”

A Top Facialist Shares Her Best Tired-Skin Tips

Knackered? Yep, same!

Superstar facialist, skin expert *and mum, Michaella Bolder, shares her favourite tips and products for making your face look less worn out.

“Whenever i’m feeling tired or groggy, I like to ice my face. Simply take an ice cube straight from the freezer and wrap it in a thin face cloth and smooth it over your skin. Move in fluid motions and gently swoosh it around the eye area and then up and down the neck. This cooling method instantly reduces swelling and puffiness as it shrinks blood vessels, and it also tightens the skin.”

Incorporate Facial Massage Into Your Routine

“Use a gentle cleanser and try and incorporate some facial massage like in the video shown below. It’s so good for brightening and lifting. I like to use Elemis Pro Cleansing Balm, Sunday Riley and Emma Hardie. They’re all fabulous cleansers that you can do this with.”

WTF is for Dinner? Family Fajita Sharing Board

Need some inspiration for what to eat tonight? TMC Editor Lydia House shares one of her favourite family meals.

“An everyday classic served in a fun way to encourage your kids to eat more veg.”

SUGGESTED INGREDIENTS:
SUGGESTED INGREDIENTS:

*Adjust the amounts to however many people are eating.
½-1 onion
1-2 peppers
1 crushed clove of garlic
½ teaspoon Paprika
1 can of sweetcorn
Grated cheese (DF can be used)
1-2 avocados (sliced or smashed)
½ can of refried beans
Chicken or beef strips
Sour cream or Greek yoghurt
Chopped tomatoes
Slices of lime
Tortilla wraps
Cos salad leaves (can be used instead of wraps)

“My kids love anything that feels like a party, I call this a fajita party, and it gets them excited to eat their food. We smother the wraps in refried beans, and they love them!”

METHOD:
METHOD:

Slice up the peppers and onion.
Add the vegetable oil to your pan, cut your chicken or beef into strips, and cook on high heat for 3 minutes.
Add the onion and peppers, then add the paprika and garlic and toss the ingredients together.
Reduce to medium heat and cook for another 5-10 minutes ensuring the chicken is fully cooked.
While the mixture cooks, rinse the sweetcorn and grate the cheese (or use pre-grated).
Slice or smash your avocado.
Warm up some refried beans.
Add all of your ingredients to a large serving board.
While it cools slightly, warm up your tortillas in the microwave on medium heat for 15-20 seconds.
Add to the board. And serve!

“The great thing I love about fajitas is that the leftovers pack away nicely and can be used for other meals throughout the week, and it can be adapted to dietary requirements, spice levels and taste.

How to Help Your Child Prepare for School

Best Selling Author Daisy Upton, aka Five-Minute Mum, shares her top tips on helping your children get ready for school.

It’s a Big Deal for You and for Them

“The cliché is true: one minute, you’re on high alert to catch milky burps, then you blink, and you’ve got a four-year-old trying on a school jumper. As an ex-teaching assistant and mum of two, I have been on both sides of the school gates. But even preparing my little ones for starting school felt quite daunting and like a big deal. But that’s because it is. For them and us! I’ve written about the things we’d done to prepare – and, in all honesty, it probably didn’t include much of what you might expect. Teachers expect children to start school not knowing anything and will teach letters and counting right from the beginning. Instead, the skills they need are pretty basic and listed below, along with some of my tips to help develop them.”

Things That Will Help Them Start School

To Get Dressed Independently

“For shoes, cut a sticker in half and pop one half inside each of their school shoes to help them match up left and right. Let them regularly have a go at doing their coat themselves. Try not to zip it up for them. If their little fingers find it tricky, play with play dough at home to build hand strength.”

Asking to Go and Going to the Toilet

“In the months leading up to your child starting school, I recommend having regular five-minute chats with them about it. During one of those chats, explain that in school, they will need to ask a grown-up to use the toilet. They’ll have to remember to wash their hands on their own too. We sing, ‘Wash wash wash your hands, scrub them nice and clean, in and out and round and round, make those handies gleam!’ To the tune of Row Row Row Your Boat.”

Asking for Help in General

“This is quite a hard skill to teach. However, in any of the games we play, whenever my little ones get frustrated at not being able to do something, I always calmly remind them that they can ask for help and often mention that at school, the adults will do the same. In my Starting School book, there are example conversations to show the children what asking for help looks like and why it is always OK.”

Recognising Their Name

“They don’t need to be able to write it, although it’s terrific if they can, but being able to spot the letters in their name is helpful. There are games for this on my website, fiveminutemum.com. A nice way to start is by playing ordering games, whereby you mix up the letter order of their name and see if they can put it right again.”

Learning to Make Friends

“My Starting School book has a page to help show the children how to make friends. We often think children intuitively have this skill, but sometimes they need a little extra support. Talk to them about how to ask someone’s name and how often knowing that is a great first step to get-ting to know someone.”

Getting Them Excited About It
Getting Them Excited About It

Share Daisy’s gentle, funny guide with your child to support them – and you! – with uniforms, meeting their first teacher, getting to school on the first day, making new friends, finding their way around, having fun at playtime, asking for help, packing their bag, learning about letters and numbers, going to assemblies, getting changed for PE, and much more.
And, of course, this book includes lots of five-minute games and activities designed by Daisy to help your child feel confident and excited about taking the big step to big school.

Coping With Anxiety

“It is natural for children to feel anxious or daunted about starting school. Here are some ways to help.”

HEARTS

“Draw a small heart on the palm of your child’s wrist, then draw a matching one on your own. Ex-plain that any time your child feels worried, they can press the special heart on their hand, and it will send a cuddle to you – and you will send one back! Practice doing this while you’re sitting to-gether, then remember to draw a heart on their wrist the first day.”

CALM CHATS

“Every few days, take five minutes to have a quiet moment with your child. Remove any distrac-tions, and just have a little chat about school. Mention their favourite things and ask them how they feel about school. Tell them what you enjoyed most when you went to school.”

PRACTICE THE SCHOOL ROUTE

“Practice the walk or drive there together before school begins. If you walk, point out the things you see so that they start to feel familiar. Take a little treat for the journey home again, so it feels like a positive experience.”

Try Not to Worry

“This year is called RECEPTION for a reason. It’s a welcome year. It’s a ‘let’s get settled into this new way of life’ year. Everyone needs to find their feet, including you, the grown-ups. So go easy on yourselves and your little people. It’s really just the beginning of the next big adventure.”

Frankie Gaff’s Super Green Veggie Pasta

“This is SO delicious. Perfect for adults and babies. You can mix it up with any green veg you like, spinach, kale, and peas all work.”

Ingredients
Ingredients

Unsalted butter
3 leeks
2 courgettes
4 cloves of garlic
150ml Low salt vegetable stock (use normal if for adults)
250ml Single cream
Cheddar cheese (as much or as little as you like)
Pasta

“If you need to sell it up to a fussy eater you can nickname it ‘Dino Pasta’.”

Method
Method

Dice up the veg and add to a pan with the unsalted butter.
Once softened add the garlic.
Once everything is super soft, add to a blender with the stock and blend. (*Let it cool if your blender doesn’t blend hot substances).
Pop your pasta on.
Add the mix back to the pan and blend in the single cream and cheese.
Once your pasta is cooked, mix it with the sauce and enjoy.

* “This makes about 2 adult portions + 3 kids portions. I freeze any left overs to use for my son Theo.”
* “When making for adults, I’d add a little more garlic and season with salt.”

Overall thoughts

“My 10-month-old son is on the move. And the juggle has just got harder! I recently went on a search to find a walker so that he could experience some contained freedom, and I found this one. It’s great and isn’t garishly coloured. It’s also very lightweight, and you can attach different toys to the top to keep things interesting. He’s very happy in it. And granted, I have had my feet run over a few times (and I still need to keep a watchful eye), but it’s made my life easier. Well, for now, anyway.”

What is it? And how do you use it?

It’s a walker for toddlers aged 6-18 months. You just pop them in it, add some of their favourite toys and off they go.

Was it good value?
Was it good value?

I think so, baby stuff is expensive but some of the walkers I found were so pricey and they’re not in these things for long, so I think this was the right price for me.

Would you recommend it?

Yes, I love it and I did a lot of research.

Overall thoughts

I bought it last year for a family holiday, and I loved it so much that it replaced my everyday pram and now lives in the boot of my car. It’s robust, stylish, well-made, and super compact. I’m currently using it for my 2 and ½-year-old girl. However, it’s still roomy enough for my 4 and ½-year-old.

What is it? And how do you use it?

This quick-fold pushchair weighs only 7.3kg and is excellent for travel and everyday use. It’s easy and smooth to manoeuvre even on irregular ground, such as packed gravel. I’ve found it super convenient to bring to restaurants as it easily folds, and I can place it under the table.

Was it good value?
Was it good value?

Granted, this is an expensive pram. But it has such a luxurious feel, has so many features and is used so often that the cost per use is miniscule.

Would you recommend it?

Without a doubt. I much prefer it to my previous travel pram, and I’m glad I made the switch.

TMC Family Recipe of the Week: Fudgy Brownies GF/DF

Ingredients

3/4 cup almond flour
1/2 cup cacao powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup dairy-free chocolate chips
3 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/3 cup maple syrup
3 tablespoons ghee, if you can’t tolerate ghee, use coconut oil
1/2 cup almond butter, opt for the runny, drippy kind

Method

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium-large size bowl, mix together the almond flour, cacao powder, sea salt, and baking soda. Set aside.

2. In a separate small bowl, add the wet ingredients. Whisk the eggs, then add the vanilla and maple syrup.

3. In a small, microwave safe bowl, melt the ghee. Add the ghee and half the chocolate chips in with the wet ingredients. Stir lightly.

4. Combine wet ingredients in with the dry ingredients and stir using a baking spatula. Don’t over beat the batter with a fork, or mixer (this will lead to more cake-like brownie texture).

5. Stir the almond butter into the brownie mixture with the spatula.

6. Pour batter into a 9×9 greased baking pan. Spread batter evenly throughout the pan so that it fills all corners. Sprinkle top of batter with the remaining 1/4 cup of chocolate chips. Bake for 15 minutes for gooey brownies and 15-22 minutes for more well-done brownies. Let brownies cool in pan. Cut brownies into 9 squares.
